Mumbai (RMN) Challenging the common belief that surgery is the only option for prostate cancer, HCG Cancer Hospital, Mumbai has successfully treated over 125 prostate cancer patients using advanced radiation technologies – Versa HD based SBRT and Robotic CyberKnife system, avoiding surgery and prolonged hospital stay.

HCG Cancer Hospital at Colaba is the first and only hospital in Mumbai to offer CyberKnife – a robotic radiosurgery system that combines robotic precision with advanced image-guidance technology. The hospital also offers Versa HD platform for Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT), which is proving to be a highly effective and non-invasive alternative to surgery for prostate cancer across various stages.

According to the Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN) 2022 report by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, India reported 37,948 new cases of prostate cancer in 2022. This number is projected to rise to around 82,252 annually by 2045, highlighting the urgent need for awareness and access to advanced, patient-friendly treatment options.

What makes SBRT effective?

SBRT is a highly precise radiation technique that directly targets the cancerous tumor while protecting surrounding healthy organs like the bladder and rectum. Unlike conventional long-duration radiation, SBRT in select patients can be completed in just 5 sessions.

There is no incision, no removal of the prostate gland, and no need for hospital admission. The treatment is delivered on an outpatient basis, allowing patients to return home after each session. This makes it especially beneficial for elderly patients and those unfit for surgery.

CyberKnife is considered a gold standard in precision. It continuously tracks internal organ movement during treatment and delivers radiation with sub-millimeter accuracy, ensuring maximum dose to the tumor and minimal exposure to nearby organs.

Doctors at HCG finalize the treatment plan after evaluating the patient’s age, overall health, stage and grade of cancer, risk category, and personal preference. A multidisciplinary team of oncologists, medical physicists, and radiation therapists ensures precise planning and execution.

Doctors Speak:

Dr. Trinanjan Basu, Head and Senior Consultant, Radiation Oncology, HCG Cancer Hospital, Mumbai said, “Many patients believe surgery is the only cure for prostate cancer. That is not true. In selected patients, advanced radiation technologies like SBRT offer excellent outcomes without any cut, surgery, or prolonged hospital stay. We assess age, stage, risk level, and health before recommending treatment. Using advanced image guidance and Versa HD platform, we deliver accurate radiation directly to the tumor while sparing the bladder and rectum. For many patients, treatment is completed in just five sessions. This is a game-changer for senior citizens and high-risk patients.”

He added that the hospital has successfully treated intermediate-risk, high-risk, and selected metastatic prostate cancer patients, with most patients aged between 60-75 years and 20 patients in the 75-85 age group.

Rupesh Choubey, Regional COO – Maharashtra & MP, HealthCare Global Enterprises Ltd. said, “With 35 years of expertise and India’s largest cancer hospital network, HCG has consistently worked to make cancer care advanced and accessible. HCG Mumbai being the first and only center in the city to offer CyberKnife is a testament to that commitment. Technology alone is not enough; clinical expertise, precise planning, and right patient selection are equally important to achieve best outcomes.”

Avik Chauhan, Cluster COO, HCG Cancer Hospital, Mumbai said, “Treating over 125 prostate cancer patients with advanced radiation is a significant milestone for HCG Mumbai. With Versa HD and CyberKnife, we are offering patients less painful, more convenient options without compromising on accuracy. We are committed to improving patient experience and treatment precision.”

Patient Experience:

Sharing his experience, a patient treated with this technology said, “After diagnosis, I was scared about surgery and long hospital stay. Doctors at HCG explained the non-surgical options in detail. I completed all radiation sessions and could go home quickly after each session. The guidance and support gave me confidence throughout.”

Another patient said the treatment was easier and painless than imagined and he was treated like a family member, not just a patient.

HCG Cancer Hospital has urged people to consult a multidisciplinary oncology team to understand whether surgery, radiation, hormone therapy, or a combination is best suited for them, as surgery is not the only option.
