MUMBAI (RMN.IN) : This Dhanteras has given a promising start to the jewellery industry. According to All India Gem & Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC) Chairman Rajesh Rokde, the total gold business across India on Dhanteras is estimated at approximately ₹60,000 crore.
Compared to last year, business has registered a growth of around 15-20% in value terms. In terms of volume, business remained almost at the same level as last year, while in value terms an increase of approximately 15% was witnessed. This is a very encouraging start for the industry.
This year, jewellery stores across the country opened as early as 8:00 AM on Dhanteras, and tremendous enthusiasm was seen among customers.
Dhanteras is considered one of the most auspicious occasions among the three-and-a-half auspicious muhurats in the Hindu calendar. There is a deep-rooted tradition of purchasing gold on this day. It is believed that purchases made on Dhanteras bring thirteenfold prosperity. According to mythology, Lord Dhanvantari emerged from Samudra Manthan carrying the Amrit Kalash on this day.
Another positive factor is that Dhanteras on November 6 and Diwali on November 8 fell at the beginning of the month. Most people had received salaries and festive bonuses, resulting in healthy cash flow and enthusiastic shopping.
Gold prices have been relatively lower over the past four to six months, which further increased consumer interest. Gold was around ₹60,000 per 10 grams in 2023, ₹80,000 in 2024, ₹1,15,000-₹1,20,000 in 2025, and around ₹1,42,000 this year. Silver has also witnessed significant appreciation.
With festive season followed by a strong wedding season, GJC is optimistic about excellent business ahead. Rokde thanked customers, saying, “The Customer is God, and it is their trust that will take our industry to greater heights.”
