Mumbai, October 16, 2026: With an aim to take Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message of ‘Har Ghar Swadeshi, Ghar-Ghar Swadeshi’ and ‘Vocal for Local’ to the new generation, the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Government of India, has organized ‘Khadi Mahotsav-2026’ in Mumbai.

The festival was inaugurated on Thursday at the KVIC Central Office, Vile Parle, Mumbai, by KVIC Chairman Manoj Goyal. The main objective of the festival is to connect Khadi and village industry products with modern lifestyle and to create new markets for artisans and rural entrepreneurs, especially focusing on Generation Z.

Speaking on the occasion, Manoj Goyal said, “Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi made Khadi a symbol of self-reliance and economic self-sufficiency during the freedom struggle. Today, there is a need to take Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message of Swadeshi to the new generation. The energy, creativity, knowledge of technology and entrepreneurial spirit of the youth can connect the Swadeshi movement to mass participation on a wider scale.”

He added, “PM’s message of ‘Har Ghar Swadeshi’ is not limited to just buying Swadeshi goods. It is about creating a sense of pride in Indian products, encouraging local producers and strengthening the country’s economic self-reliance. Through their choices, lifestyle, digital media and entrepreneurial ventures, youth can give a new identity to Swadeshi products.”

The Khadi Mahotsav is being organized from October 2 to October 31, 2026. During this period, a special discount of 20 percent on Khadi products and 10 percent on village industry products is being offered.

A total of 77 organizations from 12 states are participating with 77 exhibition stalls. These include 36 organizations related to Khadi, 33 related to PMEGP and 8 related to village industries and other schemes. States participating are Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Haryana, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Rajasthan.

The exhibition showcases a wide range of Swadeshi products including Khadi cotton, silk Khadi, poly-Khadi, readymade garments, herbal products, food items, soaps, incense sticks, spices, leather goods, artificial jewellery, wooden toys, bags, Phulkari textiles, Amla products and wooden handicrafts.

Goyal emphasized that it is necessary to preserve the traditional nature of Khadi while adapting its presentation and marketing to changing times. Youth can play an important role not just as consumers of Swadeshi products but also as their brand ambassadors, fashion designers, digital promoters and entrepreneurs. Through social media, online trade, digital marketing and start-ups, youth can take Khadi and village industry products to every corner of the country and also help connect them to international markets.

To take Prime Minister’s concept of ‘Viksit Bharat @ 2047’ and ‘Local to Global’ to the new generation, KVIC has also launched an initiative titled ‘Baat Khadi Ki’ podcast series. The objective is to connect Generation Z with the Swadeshi movement through dialogue on Khadi’s heritage, innovations, modern fashion and youth entrepreneurship. This will help connect Khadi with the preferences of the new generation and modern lifestyle and will be an important step towards realizing the dream of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Goyal said that taking local products to the global level is a big opportunity for the Khadi and village industries sector. For this, special emphasis needs to be given to quality, modern design, attractive packaging, effective branding and reach to digital marketplaces. Young designers can blend Khadi with modern fashion, digital entrepreneurs can expand its market, and start-ups can develop new business models for traditional products.

Interacting with the media, Goyal said that due to the visionary approach and policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Khadi and village industries sector has achieved unprecedented progress. In the financial year 2025-26, the turnover of the Khadi and village industries sector crossed Rs 1.87 lakh crore and employment was provided to more than 2.04 crore people. He expressed confidence that in the coming years, the sector will achieve a target turnover of Rs 2.51 lakh crore.

The event was attended by KVIC CEO, Financial Advisor, Joint CEO, Chief Vigilance Officer, Deputy CEO, senior officers and staff of the Commission, representatives of Khadi institutions, and artisans and entrepreneurs associated with PMEGP and village industry development.
