~ Rare liver donations from elderly donors marks city’s 25th liver donation reinforcing awareness that age alone should not be a barrier to organ donation ~
MUMBAI : RMI.COM : Fortis Hospital, Mulund marked another milestone in Mumbai’s transplant ecosystem with the successful retrieval and transplantation of a cadaveric liver from a 69-year-old donor, contributing to the city’s 25th liver donation of 2026. The case gains added significance as it was the second cadaver donation from Fortis Hospital, Mulund in two consecutive days. Additionally, the family of an 85-year-old donor also consented to donate his liver, highlighting the critical need for greater awareness around organ donation among senior citizens.
While organs from elderly donors are often considered to be less suitable for transplantation because of age-related decline, co-existing illnesses, or quality concerns, the liver remains one of the most resilient organs due to its remarkable regenerative capacity. In many cases, even a portion of the liver can regenerate and regain functional volume within weeks to months, making liver transplantation possible across a wider age spectrum under appropriate clinical evaluation.
In two remarkable acts of generosity, the family members of both elderly donors consented to liver donation, creating life-saving opportunities for patients awaiting transplantation. In the case of the 85-year-old donor, his wife and two children, who are central government employees based out of Thane, consented to donate his liver after witnessing several individuals within their social circles struggle while waiting for suitable organ matches over the years. Motivated by the desire to contribute towards a larger social cause, the family chose organ donation during an emotionally challenging time.
Similarly, in the case of the 69-year-old donor, consent for liver donation was provided by his son, who is based in Goa and is an employee at a private company, along with support from his brother who is based in Kanjurmarg, Mumbai. The family viewed organ donation as a noble act that could help save another life.
The cadaveric liver was transplanted into a 45-yr-old male recipient at Fortis Hospital Mulund; he is originally from Surat (currently residing in Mumbai). Listed for transplant in January 2026, the patient had been battling with End-Stage Liver Failure. The transplant was performed by a team of specialists including Dr Vikram Raut (Senior Consultant, Liver Transplant and HPB Sciences), Dr Aditya Date (Consultant Liver Transplant and HPB Surgery), and Dr Manoj Bhambare (Consultant Liver Transplant and HPB Surgery). The recipient, is a gemstone craftsmanship expert by profession, is supported by his brother.
The Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC), Mumbai, coordinated the organ allocation process, underscoring the critical role of structured organ allocation systems and transplant networks in optimizing recipient outcomes.
Dr Charudatt Vaity, Director – Critical Care, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, said, “Organ donation among elderly individuals remains relatively uncommon, largely due to the perception that age limits the viability of organs for transplantation. While advancing age and associated medical conditions can affect the suitability of certain organs, the liver is unique because of its remarkable regenerative ability and resilience. Even when only a portion of the liver is transplanted, it has the potential to regenerate and regain function over time. These donations reinforce an important message — age alone should not be considered a barrier to organ donation. Greater awareness can help more families understand that even in advanced age, organ donation can create life-saving opportunities for patients awaiting transplants.”
Dr Vishal Beri, Facility Director – Fortis Hospital, Mulund, added, “The city’s xx liver donation of 2026 is a significant milestone and highlights the growing momentum around organ donation awareness. What makes these cases particularly noteworthy is that both donors belonged to an older age group, challenging long-standing misconceptions around age and donor eligibility. Every successful transplant is made possible not only by clinical expertise and coordination, but also by families choosing hope during difficult times. Such cases serve as an important reminder that informed decisions around organ donation have the power to save multiple lives, irrespective of age.”
The successful donations further highlight the role of multidisciplinary coordination among transplant teams, critical care specialists, organ allocation authorities, and donor families in enabling timely retrieval and transplantation. Healthcare experts continue to emphasize that increasing awareness around organ donation eligibility; particularly among older populations, can help bridge the gap between organ demand and availability while offering a second chance at life to patients awaiting transplants.
